“How to Show Your Process Without Overloading Your Portfolio”
Let’s cut to it: I’ve reviewed more portfolios than I can count, while hiring for several designer roles at LEGO, and most of them are either cluttered with noise or missing the point entirely. Here’s the truth: companies don’t want everything. They want clarity. They want to see how you think, solve problems, and bring ideas to life.
Your portfolio should be visual. Screenshots, mockups, or prototypes? Yes. Long, unedited videos? No. Nobody has time for a 5-minute walkthrough when a 5-second GIF could do the job better. Use simple tools to create GIFs that highlight key functions or features. Show, don’t tell.
Start with the why. What problem were you solving? Context is key. Then, share your journey, but keep it lean—just the highlights, like a couple of iterations or a quick prototype test. Wrap it up with the impact. What changed because of your work? That’s the stuff people care about.
3 Portfolio Tips to Stand Out
Make it visual: Use GIFs to show features or functionality—simple tools make this easy. Long videos? Hard pass, I aint watching, I got 99 more portfolio’s and CVs to review. Sorry.
Tell the story: Start with context, show key steps, and end with results. Keep it tight.
Focus on the win: Highlight the impact your work had, whether it’s user engagement, sales, or solving a big problem.
Your portfolio isn’t about overwhelming people with details. It’s about showing enough to make them think, “This designer gets it.”
