Why You Feel Underqualified (and Why You’re Wrong)

Let me guess—you’re scrolling through job listings, looking at portfolios, or watching someone crush it on LinkedIn, and that little voice pops up: “You’re not ready. You don’t have enough experience. You’re not qualified.”

Let me tell you something: that voice is lying to you.

Here’s the deal: no one feels fully qualified for anything. Not CEOs. Not senior designers. Not even the people who write the job descriptions you’re stressing over. They’re just winging it with a little more confidence.

Take this stat: most people only apply to jobs if they meet 100% of the requirements. But here’s the kicker—employers know that’s rare. They don’t want someone who ticks every box; they want someone who’s smart, adaptable, and ready to learn.

Here’s why you’re wrong about being underqualified:

You bring fresh ideas. Being “new” means you haven’t been stuck in old habits. You’re bringing energy, creativity, and a new perspective to the table. That’s gold.

Skills can be learned. No one expects you to know everything. They want someone who can figure it out as they go. Show them you’re coachable, and you’re already ahead.

Experience is overrated. Most “required experience” is a wishlist. If you meet 60–70% of the qualifications, you’re good to go.

As Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn, says: “If you’re not embarrassed by the first version of your work, you’ve launched too late.”

You don’t need to feel 100% ready to get started. Apply. Put yourself out there. Prove that voice in your head wrong.

Because here’s the truth: the only thing standing between you and that role is the story you’re telling yourself. So, change the story—and go for it.

Love,
Sid.
