šŸ”„ #76 - Multiple Senior Leadership Roles @The LEGO Group

Hello Designers!
Hope you all had an amazing break, for those that celebrate Easter, Happy Easter! 🐣

What did I do? I read a lot of research papers, and I am especially interested in reading papers on behavior science. I find that these are very often useful for when designing… even if it feels unrelated.

Today is about, The Goal Gradient Effect. And the full paper can be found here - > https://www.cmu.edu/dietrich/sds/docs/loewenstein/GoalGradBeh.pdf

ā€œPeople are more likely to pitch in as charitable campaigns approach their goals. Such ā€œgoal gradient helpingā€ occurs in part because late-stage efforts provide donors with a heightened sense of personal impact, an influential source of satisfaction from prosocial acts.ā€

The Goal Gradient Effect

What has charity got to do with design Sid? Well…

The Goal Gradient Effect, the idea that the closer we get to a goal, the faster we move toward it. Not metaphorically. Literally. This is a quintessential behavior you can design for, in literally any product - Toys, Education, Finance, Healthcare, Food delivery, the list is quite literally endless.

In early studies, rats ran faster as they approached food. Humans do the same. In one experiment, people bought coffee more frequently as they got closer to a free reward. Even more interesting: people given a ā€œhead startā€ (extra stamps) finished faster than those starting from zero. This is BY DESIGN!

Progress changes behavior.

You see it everywhere.
The last 20% of a project suddenly gets all your energy.
A progress bar at 80% feels magnetic.
A nearly complete goal feels urgent.

The insight isn’t just motivation it’s perception.
People don’t act based on how far they’ve come.

Write this down, repeat it to yourself

People act based on how close they feel to finishing.

Show the gap.
Make it small.
Make it matter.

Seriously… go read the paper. Read more about human behaviours.
