The Power of the unfinished!

I am fascinated by behavioural science and I try to read as many articles/papers as possible on different topics relating to human behaviours and their motivations for doing tasks… If you know why a person does something, or often not, then right there is a goldmine for products and services!

Here’s last weeks gem.

There’s a psychological principle called the Zeigarnik Effect. It’s simple.

People remember incomplete tasks better than completed ones.

In the 1920s, psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik observed something curious in a café. Waiters could perfectly recall unpaid orders, but once the bill was settled, the details vanished from memory.

Unfinished = sticky.
Finished = closed.

She found that our brains crave closure. When something is incomplete, it creates tension. That tension keeps the task mentally active. Once it’s done, the mind lets go.
Open loops pull attention forward! This is so powerful.

  • Cliffhangers keep people watching.

  • Progress bars keep people moving.

  • “Your profile is 68% complete” keeps users engaged.

Even in your own work, this matters.

Ever notice how an unresolved idea lingers longer than a polished one? Why unfinished concepts nag at you? That tension is cognitive fuel. It keeps you thinking. Iterating. Refining.

A Small Creative Hack

If you’re stuck, don’t finish everything.

Stop mid sentence.
End a work session halfway through a layout.
Leave yourself an open loop.

When you return, your brain is already engaged. sometimes, the best way to move forward is to leave something slightly undone.

And then read about the Ovsiankina effect - The urge to complete tasks!
