The GPS Theory
I like super simple frameworks and great metaphors for life and work, and this is one for the books 🙂
I read about this somewhere recently - Maybe a instagram post? Anyway it stuck with me. I don’t know who originally coined it, but I genuinely like the concept.
It’s called the GPS theory.
When you miss a turn, your GPS doesn’t panic.
It doesn’t judge you.
It doesn’t remind you that you should’ve known better.
It just recalculates.
Careers, especially creative ones, work the exact same way.
I took detours.
I took the wrong role.
I shipped something you’re not proud of.
Said to things you later wish you’d declined.
None of that deletes the destination.
There’s no cosmic reset button that wipes out your goals because you made a less than perfect decision. The route just changes. Quietly. Automatically.
The problem is we treat wrong turns like failures instead of signals. We stare at the missed exit instead of watching the road ahead. Meanwhile, progress is still possible if you keep moving.
Growth isn’t linear. It never was. It’s adaptive.
And as a designer, this is kind of the whole job.
Design isn’t about picking the perfect path upfront. It’s about responding to change. Learning from feedback. Reworking ideas. Iterating when reality doesn’t match the plan.
A wrong turn isn’t a failure, it’s information.
Every detour sharpens your taste. Every adjustment teaches you something new about users, systems, or yourself. The designers who grow the fastest aren’t the ones who never miss a turn they’re the ones who know how to recalibrate without drama.
Design, like a good GPS, is less about certainty and more about responsiveness.
Keep learning. Keep adjusting. Keep moving forward.

OpenAI because they are probably going public this year. And you could be pretty set for life. Feel free to ignore if you are not keen on working design in the AI field.

AirBnB - Live and Work Anywhere. Yep you read that right! AirBnB is fully remote.
