I am following up last newsletters musings with this, I cant stop thinking about this.

“Creativity Isn’t Smart, It’s Curious”

I can’t state this enough, and frankly it bothers me. Everyone loves to pretend creativity is an intellectual process. I firmly believe that the most creative people seem to do it effortlessly is because they have already connected the dots, followed the red threads, and all because they were curious in the past and present.

We wrap creativity in frameworks because it makes us feel in control.

But here’s the truth:

Great creatives aren’t the smartest people in the room.
They’re the ones asking questions everyone else missed:

“What if we didn’t do it that way?”
“Why does it have to look like that?”
“What happens if we break the rule just to see?”

Curiosity is messy.
It looks unproductive.
It feels inefficient.

That’s why average designers hide behind research, frameworks, and “best practices.”
They intellectualize creativity because it’s safer than exploring.

But world-class designers?
They follow the thread of interest, not intellect.

They poke at ideas.
They wander.
They chase sparks others ignore.

Because curiosity is the engine.
Intellect is just the map.

Here’s the unlock:

• Don’t start with answers. Start with questions.

• Don’t optimize too early. Explore too early.

• Don’t execute until you’ve wandered.

Your job as a designer isn’t to be right, it’s to be interested enough to discover what’s possible.

The smartest thing you can do?

Stay curious.

A couple of great roles around Europe at Revolut, a financial services company. All these roles are remote and I have heard great things about them. It’s unicorn startup and its worth getting in early into these types of companies.
