❤️ #43 - More Design Leadership Roles

Happy Monday!

It’s Easter soon, and we are driving south to Italy. The plan was to get closer to sunshine, but it seams like its going to be warmer and sunnier up north this week! Ha.

Design Leadership is tricky and exciting! For me the tricky part is finding the balance between “Coach Vs Correct”, where the urge is to lean on your past experience and direct the team to what you want, vs coaching your team to gain the same experience and then do even better than my own ideas. This has happened countless times, where whatever the designer comes back with based on my direction and brief is waaaaaaaaay better than what I thought the result should be.

Here’s what I have learnt that’s helped me lead design teams

  • Coach, don’t correct - Ask your team questions when they present. I have found this to lead to better design work a lot of the time.

  • Spot potential - Learn early on to spot the potential in each member, that way you know exactly what challenges them and where to get the best from each of them.

  • Build confidence - Help your designer take bold swings. Show them you have their back, by backing up wild but good ideas.

  • Protect the craft - Remember, It’s ok to push for great! If something is not good enough, say it’s not and why. Just learn how to not to do it a like an ass!

  • Scale your thinking - Your job is understand how the outcome scales, how does this help the business in long term, what are you setting in motion now that will last after you’re gone?

Now go get these amazing roles and change the course of each of these companies! 🙂
