Internships That Don’t Suck: Finding Ones That Actually Help Your Career
Most design internships? Useless. You sit in meetings, tweak button colors, and maybe, just maybe, touch a real project. But a good internship—the kind that actually levels you up—follows a different playbook.
Here’s how to find one that’s worth your time:
Look for real work, not busy work. Ask upfront: “Will I own a project?” If they hesitate, run.
Find mentors, not just managers. You want people who’ll teach, not just assign tasks. Ask if a mentor will be with you during your internship.
Go where feedback flows. A great internship = constant critiques, not radio silence.
Choose impact over prestige. A small startup where you ship real work beats a big-name brand where you don’t.
Set clear goals. Know what you want to learn. If they can’t support that, it’s not the right fit.
A good internship isn’t just a résumé line—it’s a launchpad. Pick wisely.
Remember that you just need to ask to make sure you get the best internship possible
Love,
Sid.
