Procrastination - “A Brain Tantrum”
Whether I’m starting a new project, polishing up my portoflio, crafting that job application, procrastination kicks me in the butt! Everytime! Here’s what I try to beat it back…
First I remind myself - Procrastination isn’t laziness. It’s just my darn brain throwing a tantrum because starting is hard. But guess what? Sitting around “waiting for inspiration” is just fancy avoidance.
Here’s how to quit stalling and actually get shit done:
Make something ugly. Your first draft is supposed to suck. Just open that deck, presentation, figma file and drop something on the page. Ugly progress beats perfect nothing.
Set a damn timer. Work for 30 minutes, no distractions. You’ll be shocked at how much you get done when you stop pretending you need “a whole afternoon to focus.”
Shrink the monster. Huge tasks = instant overwhelm. Break it into stupidly small steps. Instead of “design the dashboard,” start with “sketch three layouts.”
Quit fake-working. Dribbble scrolling isn’t research, it’s procrastination. Give yourself 10 minutes, then close the tab and actually design something.
THE SINGLE GREAT TRICK I HAVE FOUND… JUST LAUNCH IT/SHIP IT/SEND IT EARLY… that’s the adrenaline shot I need to actually go back and clean up all the mess I “launched” (Be careful with this method, know the time and place where this is needed… 😉 )
Launch, then fix it. Perfectionists never finish anything. Ship it rough, get feedback, and tweak later. That’s how real designers work.
Love,
Sid.
