“God is in the details - Tiny edges compound ”
Alright, you’ve heard it a million times before: “God is in the details.” You roll your eyes, maybe even groan a little, thinking it’s just some overused cliché.
Sit down, let’s talk about this overused, misunderstood mantra: What it really means is simple — small stuff isn’t small. It’s where the magic happens. If you’re designing something and ignoring the details, you’re leaving the best part on the table.
Think about LEGO. We live and breathe it as LEGO designer. When we design a set, we don’t just create little bricks that click perfectly together — we obsess over the small stuff. The color shades, the connectors, the story of every character, the conflict, the challenge, the box art, the build instructions. That’s the magic. Every single detail matters.
It’s not just about the bigger picture; it’s the sum of the small things that makes the whole experience seamless and impactful. It works because we get it.
And that’s why LEGO crushes.
Here's how you can apply this to your own work:
Refine the Small Stuff: Just like LEGO, make sure every detail serves a purpose. Whether it’s a logo, a layout, or a UI element, everything should fit seamlessly into the bigger picture.
Test for Experience: We spend hours testing how the pieces interact, making sure they’re intuitive. You should do the same with your designs—test, tweak, and improve.
Simplicity Equals Impact: In LEGO, a few well-chosen pieces can create a masterpiece. Apply the same principle—don’t clutter your design. Focus on what’s necessary to communicate your message.
Designing with purpose and focusing on the small details like LEGO does can elevate any project. It’s not just about making something look good; it’s about making it work, feel right, and last.
So, yeah, “God is in the details” isn’t just a cliche. It’s a playbook. Care about the little things, because they add up to the big wins. And if you don’t, someone else will.
Love,
Sid.
